FAST IMPROVEMENT OF VENTILATION IN SCHOOLS

"Pupils need healthy air to learn well and teachers must be able to safely stand in front of the class, especially in times of corona." According to the Dutch government in their action plan to achieve rapid improvement of ventilation in schools. This means, among other things, that every classroom will have a CO2 meter so that the air quality in the classroom can be logged.

At the Energy Challenges Foundation, we warmly welcome this initiative. It fits very well with what we have been doing for years within the schools that participate in our campaigns. We monitor the consumption of gas and electricity via a simple online dashboard so that the results of the efforts of the students are immediately visible. Now we can add the monitoring of CO2 meters per class to this.

It takes no effort at all to view the results. You will even automatically receive a signal if the measured CO2 level in the classroom is too high. If this always occurs at the same time, you can take measures immediately. Collecting data is fun. But only if people take action will the desired result – better air quality in the classroom – be achieved.

On this page, we list the options for you. If you are currently purchasing CO2 meters, read on.

Energy Manager Online

At Energy Challenges, we work with our Energy Manager Online (EMO). This is a monitoring system to which various smart meters are connected. Think of gas, electricity, but also water and now also the CO2 meters. Teachers and students can log in every minute of the day to view consumption. At Energy Challenges, we use this data for energy awareness campaigns in schools. By being aware of consumption, it becomes easier to take steps to reduce it. For example, we see an average saving of about 15% on the energy bill of the participating schools.

CO2-meters & EMO

We also connect the CO2 meters in the classrooms to this system. Logging of the data – as prescribed by the ministry – is then automatically arranged. In addition, you can easily read the figures, draw conclusions from them and take action where necessary. If the values per class exceed the standard, a designated person - such as the director, caretaker or manager of the school building - will receive an email. In this e-mail that is sent in the morning, you can immediately see in which class and at what time the meter was in the red. This makes trends easier to observe and a problem can be tackled more quickly and in a targeted manner. This is even possible with behavioural changes.

This is how it works

You buy a complete package from us for the entire school. You do not have to worry about the installation or reading the data (which is quite a job with some other CO2 meters). All you need to do is provide an outlet. We take care of the further preparation and installation. We supply the CO2 meters for the classrooms and you simply and quickly connect them via a QR code that you scan with an app to the WiFi signal, then we take over and link it to the Energy Manager Online. If you are not using it yet, you will receive login details and a user manual from us.

This is wat it costs

The purchase costs are EUR 249 per CO2 meter. In addition, you pay for the CO2 monitoring module. This costs € 365 per year per school with a maximum of 20 CO2 meters. If the school has more than 20 meters, we charge a surcharge of € 15.75 per meter per year (and above all saves you a lot of time because the CO2 meters do not have to be read one by one). All prices mentioned are exclusive of VAT.

(From the EUR 249 for the CO2 meter, you will receive about EUR 150 in return from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science via the lump sum.)

We do not charge EMO costs for schools that participate in the Energy Challenges, they only pay the purchase costs of the CO2 meters.

The delivery time is between 6 and 8 weeks.

Benefits at a glance

We once again list the advantages of using CO2 meters and EMO for you:

  • Easy reading of data via EMO. The system is even so simple that primary school students can assess the data. In this simple interface you have all (consumption) data available;
  • One overview per school where each class can be viewed separately. With the values of CO2, temperature and humidity.
  • No hassle with laptops and cables to read CO2 meters and no discussion about who will do that;
  • An overview of the measured critical values every day between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM so that trends can easily be observed and action can be taken.

You can read more about EMO and the CO2 meters at www.energychallenges.shop.

More information

Would you also like to do more in the field of sustainability and energy saving at your school? Then let us organize an Energy Challenges Campaign at school.

On www. energychallenges.eu you can even see the results of all participating schools. The first results are from the covid-19 period, which means that many fluctuations in the consumption figures due to ventilation are visible. Take a look and compare a few schools, for example in North Holland.
